Planning the Perfect Fall Foliage Trip

September 2, 2020

One of the best parts of fall season is watching the trees change colors, and there are plenty of scenic roadways to choose from. Whether you’re traveling by car, motorcycle or RV, fall foliage is the perfect reason for a long weekend getaway.

When to hit the road

Timing is everything. You definitely want to schedule your trip in time to experience all of those vibrant colors in person. This interactive map(opens in a new tab) predicts when you’ll see fall foliage all across the U.S.

Many areas across the United States are brimming with vibrant red, yellow, orange and purple leaves in the autumn months. Here are a few favorites:

1. Blue Ridge Parkway – Virginia to North Carolina

The 469-mile Blue Ridge Parkway winds its way between Roanoke, Virginia, and Asheville, North Carolina. Plus, this itinerary also includes two national parks—the Great Smoky Mountains and Shenandoah—along the way.

2. Last Green Valley Scenic Byway – Connecticut

This 32-mile stretch of Route 169 is a National Heritage Corridor that runs from Connecticut to Massachusetts. Driving this scenic path will take you through 35 small towns, and the acreage is more than 75% farmland, with trees in abundance.

3. Sylamore Scenic Byway – Arkansas

All 26.5 miles of this scenic byway are in the Ozarks, full of endless mountain vistas and vast swaths of autumn leaves ablaze.

4. Green Mountain Byway – Vermont

No list of favorite fall foliage road trips would be complete without a nod to Vermont. This 11-mile byway stretches from centrally located Waterbury to northern-based Stowe. Get ready to see three state parks, quaint villages, sprawling farmland and bubbling brooks along the way.
